Mbikayi, a former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, is suspected of mismanaging millions in public funds intended for social assistance projects during his tenure. Although no formal charges have been brought so far, sources say “strong indications” have prompted the ongoing judicial investigation.
According to a legal source, investigators have collected documents indicating irregularities in budget execution and contract allocation for humanitarian aid programs between 2022 and 2023.
The Ministry of Justice issued a brief statement affirming that “no one is above the law” and reaffirmed the presumption of innocence. Government officials have framed the investigation as a sign of institutional commitment to transparency and accountability.
Opposition lawmakers offered mixed reactions. While some denounced “selective justice” targeting political figures, others urged for calm and respect for judicial independence.
“We support the search for truth but this must not become a political purge,” a member of the opposition FCC party told the press.
Steve Mbikayi Mutamba is a well-known Congolese politician and former minister, recognized for his populist rhetoric and strong presence on social media. Founder of the Labour Party, he has run for president and served in various governments, including those of Joseph Kabila and, at times, Félix Tshisekedi.
While his political alignment has shifted over time, he remains influential among certain youth groups and urban constituencies. His current legal troubles add a new chapter to an already complex and controversial career.
