General Kainerugaba, the son of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and a key figure in Uganda’s military and political landscape, was welcomed in Kinshasa as part of ongoing efforts to reinforce military collaboration in the fight against armed groups destabilizing the eastern regions of the DRC.
During the meeting, both leaders discussed critical issues relating to cross-border security threats, counter-terrorism operations, and the strategic coordination of efforts against rebel movements such as the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), which have long operated in the border areas of both countries.
This encounter comes at a time when the Great Lakes region faces mounting challenges related to insecurity, displacement of populations, and humanitarian crises. The involvement of regional actors, including Uganda, is seen as essential in supporting DRC’s efforts to restore peace in its conflict-affected eastern provinces.
President Tshisekedi reaffirmed his commitment to regional cooperation and emphasized the need for continued dialogue and joint action among neighboring states to ensure lasting peace and development in Central Africa.
Observers view this meeting as another significant step toward improving relations between Kampala and Kinshasa, particularly after past tensions linked to regional conflicts and mutual accusations of interference.
The DRC and Uganda have recently engaged in joint military operations and infrastructure projects, indicating a shift toward pragmatic partnership grounded in shared security and economic interests.
