This marks the first visit of a Ukrainian head of state to South Africa, underscoring Kyiv’s growing interest in building strategic partnerships in Africa amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
President Zelenskyy was warmly received by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, where an official welcoming ceremony was held. The two leaders engaged in bilateral talks focusing on several key areas, including economic cooperation, food security, trade, and the global implications of the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude for South Africa’s continued support in international forums and emphasized the importance of forming a united global stance on respecting international law and territorial integrity. He also highlighted Ukraine’s desire to collaborate more closely with African nations, particularly in areas such as agricultural exports, infrastructure development, and energy.
President Ramaphosa welcomed the initiative, noting the importance of dialogue and cooperation in resolving international conflicts and fostering sustainable development. He reiterated South Africa’s commitment to peace and diplomacy, calling for an end to hostilities and a return to negotiations in Eastern Europe.
The visit also included meetings with South African business leaders and members of the Ukrainian diaspora. It is expected to lay the groundwork for new agreements in trade and development, as well as increased political engagement between Ukraine and countries across the African continent.
President Zelenskyy’s trip is seen as part of a broader Ukrainian diplomatic outreach effort to counterbalance Russian influence in Africa and to garner broader international support as the conflict with Russia continues.
