Just one month after being discharged from the hospital where he had a close brush with death due to double pneumonia Pope Francis made a surprising public appearance on Easter Sunday. Despite his frailty, he rode through St. Peter’s Square in the “popemobile” for around fifteen minutes, blessing infants and waving to the thousands of faithful gathered for the occasion. He delegated the reading of his Easter message, in which he called for the dismantling of barriers that foster division.
Seen by many as a courageous innovator, and by others as a disruptive force, Pope Francis consistently sought to steer the Catholic Church toward greater humility, inclusiveness, and engagement with the modern world. Since his election in 2013, he advocated for a Church closer to the marginalized and more responsive to global challenges.
The world now prepares to mourn a spiritual leader whose influence extended far beyond the walls of the Vatican, resonating across religious, political, and cultural spheres.
