Muyaya’s Reaction and Concerns
During his appearance on Radio Okapi’s “Parole aux auditeurs” and in a press briefing held in Lubumbashi, Patrick Muyaya commented cautiously on the situation, stating that while the government had yet to officially confirm Kabila’s presence in Goma, the move was symbolically and politically significant.
“We’re waiting to see, we’re waiting to hear, because we shouldn’t make assumptions. But one must remember that the President of the Republic [Félix Tshisekedi] had already spoken about this. He said that the former President had been connected to the AFC for several months. Now, if he decides to return, we’ll see what is said,” Muyaya explained.
The AFC (Alliance Fleuve Congo) is seen by some in the Congolese government as being linked to or sympathetic with the M23 movement, adding another layer of complexity to Kabila’s presence in the area.
Reminder of Kabila’s Past Role Against M23
Muyaya emphasized the symbolic weight of Kabila’s actions, recalling the legacy of his father, Laurent-Désiré Kabila, who famously vowed “never to betray the Congo.” He reminded the public that Joseph Kabila, during his presidency, fought against the M23 rebellion and paid a significant price through the loss of high-ranking officers and soldiers.
“Let’s not forget that President Kabila himself fought M23. As Commander-in-Chief at the time, many senior officers and soldiers lost their lives fighting against Rwanda’s proxies. These were sacrifices made to preserve the unity and territorial integrity of the Democratic Republic of Congo,” he stated.
