The visit by Obasanjo, who serves as one of Africa’s key mediators in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) peace process, was not only symbolic but also strategic. Their encounter was centered on the persistent insecurity in eastern DRC and the broader regional dynamics affecting peace and stability in the Great Lakes region.
Focus on Eastern DRC Crisis
During their meeting, Kagame and Obasanjo held in-depth discussions about the deteriorating humanitarian and security situation in eastern DRC. Fighting in the provinces of North Kivu and Ituri has intensified in recent months, displacing thousands of civilians and straining regional relations particularly between Rwanda and the DRC.
Obasanjo emphasized the importance of reinvigorating dialogue among the concerned parties, including the governments of Rwanda and DRC, as well as rebel groups and civil society actors. He stressed the urgency of enforcing the fragile ceasefire and creating space for humanitarian access in the conflict zones.
Reaffirming Rwanda’s Diplomatic Engagement
President Kagame reiterated Rwanda’s support for an African-led peace process and its commitment to regional stability. He expressed appreciation for the efforts of the African Union, East African Community (EAC), and Southern African Development Community (SADC) in mediating the conflict and promoting sustainable solutions.
“Rwanda remains engaged and open to constructive dialogue aimed at restoring peace in eastern Congo. We appreciate the continued role of African leaders like President Obasanjo in advancing these goals,” Kagame reportedly stated during the meeting.
Olusegun Obasanjo, a veteran statesman and former Nigerian head of state, plays a critical role in continental diplomacy. He is part of a high-level panel of African mediators appointed by regional organizations to facilitate peace in the eastern DRC. The panel includes other prominent African figures such as former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and former South African President Kgalema Motlanthe.
Obasanjo’s mission seeks to harmonize regional peace initiatives, including the Nairobi and Luanda processes, and to build trust among conflicting parties. His Kigali visit follows a series of consultations in Nairobi, Kinshasa, and Addis Ababa aimed at unblocking political and security deadlocks.
Beyond diplomacy, the meeting also served to dispel growing speculation over President Kagame’s well-being. His sudden reappearance alongside a respected African leader like Obasanjo helped reassure the Rwandan public and international observers of his active leadership.
The Kagame–Obasanjo meeting is expected to reinvigorate ongoing peace initiatives and may lead to renewed trilateral talks involving Rwanda, the DRC, and key regional actors. As the security crisis in eastern Congo remains one of Africa’s most pressing challenges, the international community is closely watching how African-led efforts like Obasanjo’s mission will shape the path to peace.
