For more than a month now in some markets in the capital of the province of Sud-Kivu, some of the basic necessities increased the prices, in particular bread, vegetable oil, sugar, milk, rice and flour.
This is the observation made this Tuesday, April 12, 2022 by the reporters of KivuAvenir.com in the markets of three municipalities that make up the city of Bukavu, and in the central market of Kadutu.
“It has already been more than a month since we experienced this increase in bread prices. The bread formerly sold at 200 FC is now sold at 300 FC and that of 300 FC at 500 FC. We were told nothing about it “, explains a bread seller met around one of the bakeries in the city.
The breads produced with firewood are not left out. According to a client of an artisanal bakery in the municipality of Ibanda, the production of 200 FC breads is no longer done and the weight of the other breads has significantly decreased.
“With us in the artisan Bakeries, we no longer make 200 FC breads, and those of 300 FC we have reduced the grammage. So, there are only 300 FC, 500 FC, 700 FC and 1,000 FC breads… Even in our households, these breads are not enough for the children. But we were not warned in advance.
But, we heard about the war in Ukraine, where the wheat flour comes from. On the other hand, our percentages that we received at the end of the month have remained intact “, she explained.
If the prices of factory breads have increased, on the other hand those of Bukavu UPAK Bread Factory known as “square lipa, pistol, baguette” have kept the same price.
“The prices of our breads have not increased. They remained intact. The grammage too”, specifies a saleswoman.
On the other hand, the prices of basic necessities have also increased. At the Kadutu Central Market, for example, where we observed, the 5 litter container of vegetable oil, which sold for between 22,000 FC and 23,000 FC, now sells for between 25,000 FC and 28,000 FC. The 50kg bag of rice currently sells for 52,000 FC, and a 900g box of milk between 16,000 FC and 18,000 FC.
According to some sources, this price spike is caused by the Russia-Ukrainne War, because the DRC lives mainly on imports.
