The torrential rain flooded several neighborhoods and submerged parts of Lumumba Boulevard, one of the city’s main arteries, paralyzing traffic and rendering many roads impassable.
“I had to turn back while heading to the airport for a flight,” one contact reported. Another added, “I came to pick up my little brother from the airport — it’s past midnight now and we’re still not moving. Everything is blocked around the Tshangu area.”
The hardest-hit communes include Limete, Matete, Masina, Kinsenso, and N’djili, where roads have turned into rivers and homes are underwater. An official source confirmed that fatalities have also been recorded due to the flooding.
Authorities are grappling with the scale of the disaster. On Saturday evening, Prime Minister Judith Suminwa assured the public that the government is closely monitoring the situation and is working to provide an appropriate response.
