The Congolese authorities want to press the accelerator after the simultaneous attacks carried out by the rebels of the M23 against the positions of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), in the territory of Rutshuru. Faced with this situation, Kinshasa severely warned this rebel movement against this act of rebellion aimed at sabotaging the commitment of the heads of state of the Great Lakes sub-region “in the peace process” in the DRC.
“If this movement and all that there is as an affiliated force behind it, continue their adventure, they will be subjected to force”, declared Patrick Muyaya, Minister of Communication and Media, also government spokesperson. In addition to the warning, Kinshasa is considering resorting to the diplomatic option. Félix Tshisekedi “will himself continue meetings both diplomatically and militarily to take all the necessary measures to allow the return of peace”, he added.
Rwanda singled out
On Wednesday, May 25, 2022, heavy fighting pitted the Congolese army against the M23 rebels in Kibumba, 20 km from the city of Goma, capital of the province of North Kivu. On this occasion, the Army seized the extended joint verification mechanism of the International Conference for the Great Lakes Region (CIRGL) to carry out investigations into the origin of these incidents. During the crisis meeting on the security situation in North Kivu, Congolese Foreign Minister Christophe Lutundula pointed the finger at Kigali for supporting the rebels.
“The M23, supported by Rwanda, attacked the international troops of MONUSCO”, he accused.
Currently fighting is reported around the Rumangabo military training camp where the loyalist army is chasing the enemy.
